In this workhop we compose and link two document files, term and expand, in a folder Myhypertext. Options are reflection, external websites, and design. Although a Web editor is preferable, because word processors are available in most computer labs as well as personal computers, these directions are based on Word 2000 and be saved as default doc files or as htm. Variations are necessary for other word processors, Web editors, and operating systems.
Steps 1-5: Myhypertext Folder and Term Page |
- From the File menu of your word processor, select New and then select Blank Document or click the new document icon.
- On this page compose one of the following types of texts that defines a term or concept of importance in the field you teach or that you are studying:
a 4-8-line poem or 2-3 prose sentences.
- Press Enter twice to create a blank line. Type your name, e-mail address, and the date.
- From the File menu, select Save As.
- When the Save as menu box appears, locate the New Folder icon on the top menu bar (a file folder image with sparkles). Make a new folder named Myhypertext.
- Locate the Save in box and be sure you are saving your document within the Myhypertext folder.
- In the File name box, write term.
- After you have saved the file, select from your text a meaningful word or phrase up to 3 words. Highlight those words and copy them to the clipboard (Edit-Copy or CTRL-C or rightclick-Copy).

Steps 6-10: Expansion Document/File |
- Leave your term file open and open a new blank page. Paste your meaningful word or phrase on this new page (Edit-Paste or CTRL-V or rightclick-Paste).
- Compose one or two sentences in which you comment on or elaborate on the meaning of these meaningful words, being sure to include the copied word or phrase and to establish a clear connection in meaning between this new text and the poem or prose on your term page.
- Press Enter twice to create a blank line. Type your name, e-mail address, and the date.
- Save this new page in your Myhypertext folder as a file named expand.
- Within one of the sentences on this Expand page, highlight a word or phrase that connects in meaning to your term page.
- With that text highlighted, locate the link icon on the top menu bar. If there's no link icon, go to the Insert menu at the top of the page and select Hyperlink.
- From the hyperlink box, Browse for file. Locate the term file within your Myhypertext folder. Click OK and OK. The highlighted text should now be underlined and probably blue.
- Save this updated expand page in your Myhypertext folder.

Steps 11-12: Linking and Previewing the Pages |
- Without closing the expand file, return to your term page. Highlight the meaningful words or phrase if not already highlighted. Select the link icon and browse to choose the filename expand to establish a hyperlink, and then save the updated term page.
- Click on the underlined hyperlinks, which should connect the pages to each other. If you saved as Web pages, preview in a browser by opening the term file in Myhypertext.

Reflection on the Process |
- Leave your term file open and open a new blank page.
- Write a brief reflection on the process you have just participated in.
- How well did writing the initial page term help you focus on the term or concept? How might such a process be helpful to your students?
- How did writing the elaboration on a word or phrase saved as expand help you further understand the term or concept? How might such a process be helpful to your students?
- How does this practice of linking words and phrases contribute to your own thinking further about the term or concept? How might such a process be helpful to your students?
- Save this page as a file in your Myhypertext folder as reflection.
- Read your reflection and find a word or phrase that you can link back to your term page and a word or phrase that you can link back to your expand page. If you are unable to find words that work, revise your reflection to make the connections.
- Return to your term page and at the bottom write the word Reflection. Link that phrase to your reflection file and save the term page.
- Click on the underlined hyperlinks, which should connect the pages to each other. If you saved as Web pages, preview in a browser by opening the term file in Myhypertext.
|
Optional Activities |
- Link to an external Website: Locate a site relevant to the term defined, and incorporate the link within the language of the term, not as a standalone item.
- Review some design basics to complement the text: Incorporate an appropriate graphic and modify background, font, and colors.
