  • Resources for Moderators and Facilitators of Online Discussion, Mauri Collins and Zane L. Berge: Although Collins and Berge emphasize effective use and management of instructional e-mail lists, most of the theory and practice adapts easily to threaded Web discussion forums like WebBoard and the forums within BlackBoard or WebCT. Of particular interest is the link to Guidelines for Moderating Online Educational Computer Conferences by David Winograd.
  • American Center for Study of Distance Education, Pennsylvania State University: This respected organization's Website lInks to the site for the journal, The Distance Education Online Symposium (DEOS), and other resources.
  • Distance Learning on the Net, Glenn Hoyle: This independent site by an academic-now-Web developer is a helpful gateway to technology in education.
  • Distance Education Clearinghouse, University of Wisconsin: Updated often, this site is both a gateway and a newsletter that highlights featured sites.
  • Instructional Development and Technology Sites Worldwide, Dalhousie University: This gateway from Nova Scotia has an international emphasis.
  • Tomorrow's Professor: email subscription and web access to articles about "academic life, preparing for the professorate, and new approaches to teaching, learning, and research" (Rick Reis, Stanford U Learning Lab)
  • Internet Scout Project: email subscription and web access to "a selection of the newest and most interesting high-quality online science, math, engineering and technology resources.... of interest to all ages of readers...." (National Science Digital Library)
  • CIT Infobits: email subscription news from "information and instructional technology sources" (UNC-Chapel Hill Center for Instructional Technology)
  • Edupage: email subscription news about information technology from EDUCAUSE, "whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology"
  • Webquest Page: "inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web.... to focus on using information...[for] analysis, synthesis and evaluation" (Bernie Dodge and Tom March, San Diego State U)
  • Chronicle of Higher Education: job lists and selected articles are free; others available only to print-edition subscribers—news on disciplinary and general education as well as information technology and distance education
  • Asynchronous Learning Networks: journal, magazine, workshops, and conferences focusing on "computer and communications technologies [primarily the Web] to work with remote learning resources, including coaches and other learners, but without the requirement to be online at the same time"
  • World Lecture Hall Database of Faculty Websites, University of Texas-Austin: Teachers submit their own classes for this database categorized by discipline. Most are Web-enhanced rather than online classes. You might have to search through quite a few listings to find a useful resource, but usually you will find success.
  • American Memory Collection: "primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States.... 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections"
  • New York Times Circuits: weekly email of technology news, tips, and commentary by David Pogue, State of the Art columnist
  • Federal Resources for Educational Excellence: 30-plus government agencies in partnership with educators provide resources in a variety of disciplines, mostly for K-12 with some useful for higher education
